Why We Love Ben & Jerry’s

Why We Love Ben & Jerry’s

We’re excited to share all the reasons we think Inflexion is great, but we’re also stoked to take a look at what other companies are doing that make them great. (And we also want to talk to you about how we can work together to make your brand great…but that’s a conversation for Joe and Elizabeth, so give them a call!)

Each of us at Inflexion were asked to name three brands and people we felt embody greatness. Everyone had great responses, but since I’m the one sifting through them and I have a deep, deep love of ice cream, let’s start by taking a look at why Kevin Cale, Executive Art Director, chose Ben & Jerry’s for one of his three great companies.

RecognizeGreatnessBen & Jerry’s has a three-part mission. Of course they want to make excellent ice cream, they want to manage their company for sustainable financial growth, and they are committed to making the world a better place. The first two are pretty clear, but I’ll bet you a pint of ice cream you weren’t aware of all the great social initiatives and all around good stuff Ben & Jerry’s is doing.

  • Through their “Caring Dairy” program, farmers pledge to refrain from using artificial growth hormones and make sustainable farming techniques a priority.
  • They only use cage-free eggs.
  • They are part of the non-GMO and fair-trade movements.
  • They’re committed to reducing their emissions each year, and dairy waste is sent back to their sourcing farms, where it’s used to great energy for the farm.
  • Their packaging is sourced responsibly, which ensures wildlife, biodiversity and sustainability are protected.
  • The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation funds the Vermont Community Action Team (CAT) grant program, which allows employees to support organizations in their local communities through grants. In 2012, 152 organizations were supported.
  • All of the brownies used in Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Half Baked ice creams are baked at Greyston Bakery, a New York enterprise dedicated to providing jobs for the unemployed. Greystone provides individuals in Southwest Yonkers, NY with employment, skills and resources to lift them out of poverty. That alone is pretty great!

Their employees are treated pretty well also with benefits ranging from gym memberships and three pints of ice cream to take home—everyday—to bringing dogs to work and having the opportunity to name ice cream flavors. I think everyone here at Inflexion agrees that Ben & Jerry’s stands for greatness (even Stacey who is allergic to dairy).
