We recently met some pretty terrific people, working for equally terrific companies that are doing wonderful things in the area of sustainability. When businesses take action to reduce their impact on the earth, we all benefit. And that’s pretty great. As you know, we think greatness should be recognized.
Avery
Averys says, “We view sustainability not only as a responsibility, but also as an opportunity to serve customers and advance our market leadership.” It’s on track for reducing greenhouse gases, but its main goal is to reduce the amount of waste to landfill until that number is ultimately zero.
ConAgra Foods
ConAgra Foods has the distinction of being listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America for four consecutive years. According to its website, ConAgra “conserved more than 820 million gallons of water, reduced carbon emissions and landfill waste and cut packaging needs, saving more than $30 million.”
Hershey
With 72% water reduction, 38% waste reduction and 23% greenhouse gas emissions reduction, it’s no surprise that Hershey has been placed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World and North America Index for 2014. In addition, Hershey aims for sustainability in its cocoa production. Its “sustainability strategy seeks to modernize cocoa farming to increase farmer incomes, attract new farmers and improve cocoa growing communities.”
Kellogg’s
Nearly all of Kellogg’s cereal boxes are made with 100% recycled cartonboard. But that’s not all. One of its many objectives includes working with farmers to improve sustainability practices in agriculture. Kellogg’s was even recognized as one of Interbrand’s “Top 50 Best Global Green Brands.”
Kimberly-Clark
Kimberly-Clark has been making lots of changes for the sake of reducing its impact on the earth, including making more sustainable packaging, reducing water use during manufacturing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company also helps people find alternatives to placing waste in landfills.
PepsiCo
Speaking of Interbrand’s “Top 50 Best Global Green Brands,” PepsiCo also made the list. Among its sustainability accomplishments is staying constant in its greenhouse gas emissions despite growth in production as it continues to work to achieve absolute reduction.
Prudential
Prudential is a major player in the sustainability movement. Whether investing alternative sources of energy, leading several initiatives including recycling, sustainable print, design, and distribution, encouraging mass transit and telecommuting, enhancing sustainable technology, or providing assistance for improving green space in its home state of New Jersey, Prudential has shown that it is a company that cares about being green.
Royal Wine Corp.
The environment has been reaping the benefits of a solar power system on the roof of Royal Wine Corp.’s headquarters and warehouse building, which was completed just about three years ago. Per its website, It covers nearly four acres of rooftop space and causes no negative impact to the environment. Clearly this company is committed to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
Steelcase
Among other green initiatives, this office furniture company is committed to renewable energy. Their “long-term commitment makes Steelcase the 15th largest 100% renewable energy purchaser in the United States according to the U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership.”
Unilever
As a company on Forbes World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2014, Unilever incorporates sustainability not as a separate company goal, but weaves it throughout its everyday strategy. It acknowledges that incorporating sustainability practices is a win-win for the environment as well as for the company’s bottom line.
