Why Content Precedes Responsive Website Design

Why Content Precedes Responsive Website Design

The best way to kickoff website designs doesn’t start with mockups. It begins with content. Plan for targeted content, and you’ll produce a targeted website design.

Website designers often use placeholder text to create a wireframe and design the first few pages of a website. While they begin to build an aesthetically-pleasing website layout, they fail to address the specific content that will eventually exist on each page.

While I attended An Event Apart in Boston, MA last month, I was moved by Jeffery Zeldman’s presentation: Content First! During his talk, he drove home this point… Zeldman—a website designer, content strategist and author—took this idea a step further, explaining the value of developing a content strategy for mobile-centric design. He and others already realize: “The days of ‘Best viewed with… ‘ are finally bend us.”

Instead of designing pages for full-sized screens, my team can build sites that are viewed on a range of devices, such as tablets and smartphones. While I can’t control what viewers use to see the site, I can create a highly responsive site that adapts well.

How does my team at Inflexion Interactive create clear and concise sites that can be viewed on any device? Good responsive design demands good content planning—first. What do you need to share online?

I want to hear what you must share—and match that to what your visitors want to read—before we create wireframes and color schemes. Doing so ensures the design addresses your specific content needs, rather than having to scale up/down your specific content needs to match a somewhat misguided site. At Inflexion Interactive, I’m confident we have a lot of tricks up our sleeves to create aesthetically pleasing websites for smartphones, tablets and traditional monitors. What makes our responsive website designs really pop is the viewer-focused page content.

That’s made possible by our commitment to a content-first strategy. To see what we can do for your business online, view our responsive website design work and contact us.
